Ten top tips for moving as a single mum

Moving, in general, is a nightmare. Moving as a single mum is even worse. Especially if it’s your first move since your separation from the other parent of your child, or children.

Overall, I moved four times as a single mum, and I can say that it did get easier. The first time was the worst. It was back in 2013. My daughter’s dad and I had split up and I moved interstate with a five-month-old baby. I packed up our life in Perth, got all my furniture and belongings onto a truck, packed up my car with essentials that I’d need for the first few months (including the bassinet, high chair, pram, baby carrier, breast pump, and all the other baby items), put that car on a train bound for Sydney, and got on a plane with nowhere to live.Continue Reading →

Five factors you need to consider in your parenting plan

factors you need to consider in your parenting plan, Single Mothers, single mum, single mom, single mother, single parent, singlemothersurvivalguide.com, divorce coach, coach for single mums, coach for single moms

For single mothers, negotiating parenting agreements is a crucial step in ensuring the well-being and stability of their children. These agreements lay the foundation for co-parenting and provide clarity on important aspects of raising children post-separation or divorce.

A parenting plan is a written record of an agreement between you and your ex about the care of the children. However, it is not a legally enforceable agreement.

If you can come to your own agreement with your ex, and create a parenting plan, it is far less stressful, not to mention cheaper than going to court for formal consent orders. However, if you and your ex continue to disagree about parenting arrangements, you may need a parenting order from a family court. You can also choose to create your own agreement and put it into formal court orders.

Whilst agreements can be oral, a written parenting plan is a great idea. This is because it clearly stipulates whom the children will live with and when so there is no confusion. It may also include religious, cultural, or educational considerations, what happens during school holidays, going overseas, domestic travel, what happens when the child is sick, co-curricular activities, and more.

In this blog post, we will discuss the five top factors that single mums need to consider when creating parenting agreements. By carefully considering these factors, you can establish a fair and effective co-parenting arrangement that prioritizes the best interests of your children.Continue Reading →

As a parent, it can be challenging to encourage your child to express their feelings. However, it’s important to teach your child healthy emotional expression, as it helps them to develop social skills, build self-esteem, and better manage stress.

It’s also crucial for kids to express their feelings after their parents break up because it helps them process their emotions which helps them heal and move forward. They also need to know that their feelings are acknowledged and that it is okay to feel the way they do. And it also allows them to share their concerns, ask questions, and seek clarity about the changes happening in their lives which provides reassurance.

Remember, every child is unique, and their responses to a parental breakup can vary. Some kids may express their feelings more openly, while others may be more reserved. It is essential for parents to create a safe and non-judgmental environment. This helps children feel comfortable expressing themselves in their own way.
