How to make relaxing on holidays with kids easy
This blog post is sponsored by ABC Reading Eggs.
We’ve just returned from a holiday in Port Douglas which was absolutely lovely. Gosh, we are lucky to live in such a beautiful country. We saw some amazing sights – the Daintree and Cape Tribulation were particular standouts. We also swam, ate, had adventures and just had an overall sensational time. But we also really enjoyed some downtime by the pool. We both really needed it.
Sometimes as a single parent, getting downtime is not easy. There’s no other parent to take over from you when you need it, and add into the mix (in my case anyway) a child who is a ball of energy and wants you in the pool with them at all times (whenever you go with the intention of sitting down next to it with a good book). And I don’t know about you, but my child loves a chat. Loves it. And as much as I love that she loves a chat, sometimes I just need a bit of stillness and silence. Time to read, time to think. Time to myself. And that is where ABC Reading Eggs comes in. It’s a perfect win-win solution for us.
Just in case you haven’t heard of it, ABC Reading Eggs is a comprehensive learn to read program that has been created by highly experienced school teachers, writers, and developers to help children aged 2 – 13 become fluent and proficient readers. It is a self-paced online program that you can work through (either with your kids or they can even do it on their own) online or on the app. And it’s full of games and activities that are easy to follow and really engaging for kids.
It is filled with colourful animations, catchy songs and exciting rewards which regularly results in squeals of excitement by my daughter. So if your kid has the attention span of a fish (like mine) – they will be motivated to stay on task for longer. Plus as my daughter explains, she likes it because it helps her “use her brain” unlike some of the other games and apps that she has.
And why do I love it? Firstly – as I mentioned earlier – as a parent, and especially as a single parent, sometimes you need your kids to be occupied so you can get some stuff done, or even lie by a pool with a book. Let’s be real! And ABC Reading Eggs is positive screen time for your children. They are learning to read and they don’t even realise they’re learning – because it’s a game! Secondly – I trust ABC Reading Eggs, and it’s also used at my daughter’s school. In fact, it’s used by over 10 million children worldwide. It’s based on solid scientific research and proven learning principles. AND it’s multi-award winning! Thirdly – I want to give my daughter the best start in life and evidence tells us that reading is the #1 skill required for future academic success. I have grown up loving to read; I absolutely love books and I really want to instil this love of reading, and getting lost in books, in my daughter too. We read books together most nights, and ABC Reading Eggs helps in that it develops the essential early literacy skills needed for a lifetime of reading success.
I had two of my daughter’s friends in the car recently and I was thinking about this very blog post that I was going to write. Using the opportunity, I asked them what they thought about ABC Reading Eggs. They all talked about their love for ABC Reading Eggs and unanimously said that it made learning “REALLY FUN!”. And hearing the three of them encouraging each other on when they talked about what map (or level) they were on and what rewards they had received was very sweet.
We’re big ABC Reading Eggs fans at our house; it not only comes in handy when needing some quiet time on holidays, but we’ll be using it throughout the year too, especially now with school going back.
