As a single mother, venturing into the online dating world can feel like venturing into uncharted territory. It’s normal to have questions, concerns, and maybe even a healthy dose of trepidation. But fear not, mama! With the right approach, online dating can be a fun, positive, and empowering experience. Here are some tips to help you if you are online dating as a single mum…
1. Craft an Authentic Profile
- Be genuine: Showcase your true self, your passions, and your interests. Highlight what makes you unique and what brings you joy.
- Use high-quality pictures: Choose photos that represent your current look and reflect your personality. Use a variety to showcase different sides of your personality and your interests. Avoid heavily filtered or outdated images.
- Write a compelling bio: Briefly share your story, your values, and what you’re looking for in a partner (not what you’re NOT looking for). Be positive and avoid negativity.
- Be honest and upfront: Don’t shy away from mentioning what you want and what you are about. It’s important to find someone who is comfortable with and supportive of you and also your family life.
2. Prioritise Safety
- Use trusted platforms: Choose established dating websites or apps with good reputations.
- Never share personal information: Never share your address and phone number until you feel comfortable and have met the person in person. I wouldn’t share a last name either. They may be able to find out a lot about you with this information. Also, do not disclose anything about where exactly you work, your income, or other financial details.
- Meet in public places for first dates: Choose well-lit, populated areas, and let a friend or family member know where you’re going and who you’re meeting.
- Trust your gut: If someone makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, don’t hesitate to end the interaction and report them to the platform.
3. Communication Strategies
- Start with casual conversation: Get to know someone through messages before moving to phone calls or video chats.
- Ask open-ended questions: This encourages deeper conversation and helps you gauge their compatibility with your values and interests.
- Be clear about your expectations: Communicate what you’re looking for in a partner, whether it’s casual dating or a potential long-term relationship.
- Be patient: Building meaningful connections takes time. Don’t rush into anything you’re not comfortable with. Know that you will probably meet some not-great matches along the way. Finding the right person can take time (it took me 8 years).
4. Remember
- Don’t settle: You deserve someone who respects, values, and supports you and your life with your children.
- Prioritise self-care: Take care of yourself emotionally and physically. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
- Enjoy the process: Dating can be fun! Approach it with an open mind and a positive attitude.
Bonus Tip: If you have a good co-parenting relationship, consider discussing your decision to explore online dating with your co-parent, especially if your children are older. Open communication and transparency can help maintain a healthy co-parenting dynamic.
Remember, you are not alone in this journey. Online dating as a single mum can be a challenge, but there are countless resources available to support you on your online dating adventure. With a little preparation and a positive outlook, you can navigate the scene and find a fulfilling connection that enriches your life.
